Audiology Unit, Otorhinolaryngology Department Faculty of Medicine – Ain Shams University

For approximately five decades since its inauguration, the Audiology Unit, Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) dept. of Ain Shams University (ASU) has made remarkable achievements in the field of Audiology in Egypt; these achievements acted as a beacon for audiologists, practitioners, and medical students, both nationally and internationally.

Under the patronage of Mrs. Gihan El-Sadat and the support of late ORL Professor Aly El-Mofty, the Audiology Unit was established in April 1973 at El-Demerdash hospital. Since then, the Audiology Unit has provided numerous activities to serve the hearing-impaired population under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Salah Soliman. In 1985, the Audiology unit at Ain Shams Specialized University Hospital (ASUSH) began to provide its services too.

Over the years, both units affiliated to ASU continue to provide diagnostic & therapeutic services, education, scientific research and outreaching programs. Many speech perception tests and remediation material were developed in Arabic language. A number of specialized clinics were established to serve different scopes of auditory disabilities which include auditory evoked potentials, central auditory processing, vestibular diagnosis and remediation, hearing aid and cochlear implant clinics.

Being the first in the Middle East, the unit has granted, to date, a total of 326 Master’s degrees and 122 doctorate degrees to graduates from universities in Egypt and the Arab World, in addition to numerous publications in different fields of audio-vestibular medicine. The unit staff members have participated and organized several conferences and workshops at the local, regional, and international levels. They also heavily contributed to the establishment of neonatal screening in Egypt.

Joint educational channels were activated between the Audiology unit at ASU and international centers, universities, and associations such as the WHO, UNICEF, International Association of Physicians in Audiology (IAPA) and International Association of Logopedists and Phoniatricians (IALP) - Audiology group.
