Audiology unit has a lot of clinical activities related to different specialized clinics that help a large sector of patients under the umbrella of audio-vestibular medicine.
· Basic clinic:
Mainly concerned with diagnosis of a wide range of disorders that affect hearing sensitivity of the pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Basic clinic is equipped with advanced diagnostic clinical audiometers, diagnostic immitancemetry, in addition to sound treated rooms and otoscopes. After diagnosis of such disorders, counseling about different management plans is performed.
· Electrophysiology lab. :
It is involved in the following clinical activities:
ü Screening of newborn either through screening otoacoustic emission (OAE) or automated auditory brainstem response (AABR).
ü Diagnostic auditory brainstem response (ABR) for infants and young children below age of two and half years.
ü Diagnostic otoacoustic emission (OAE).
ü Complex ABR (cABR)
ü Middle latency response (MLR)
ü Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP)
All the previously mentioned functions help the audiovestibular physician to perform wide range of diagnostics ranging from peripheral hearing loss up to dysfunction of higher auditory and cortical centers, in addition to follow up and prognosis of hearing impaired children fitted either with hearing aids or cochlear implants.
Hearing aid clinic:
Concerned with prescribing appropriate hearing aids to hearing impaired children and adults. It also includes hearing aid adjustment through different software interfaces to ensure providing the patient with sufficient amplification needed and enabling specific advanced features in the hearing aid device whenever indicated.
Vestibular clinic:
Recently, vestibular clinic has gained popularity due to increased numbers of patients suffering from dizziness. Patient’s journey in the vestibular clinic follows a road map starting from proper and detailed history taking, office testing, advanced laboratory testing with highly advanced equipment e.g. videonystagmography (VNG) and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). This journey ends with a management plan either medical or vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). Scope of vestibular clinic also includes knowledge sharing with other specialties related to balance disorders like neurology and physical medicine.
Cochlear implant clinic:
One of the eminent cochlear implant centers in Egypt and Middle East. Provide regular rehabilitation services to pediatric or adult patients to optimize cochlear implantation outcome in collaboration with other departments especially phoniatric department.
Central clinic:
It was and still is the most important destination of patients suspected to have auditory processing disorder (APD) from all over Egypt. Its role does not only to diagnose central processing deficit but also to provide rehabilitation services and following up patient progress.
